On these nice, hot summer days nothing beats a day at the beach, enjoying the breeze, the sand and the surf. It's easy to turn that amazing and relaxing beach day into a dietary mine field when we pack our snacks.
Food manufacturers know that easy, portable and less-messy are what we are looking for and they are happy to provide "snacks" that fit all of those descriptions but fall well short when it comes to our health (seriously, Captains Wafers?). With a little effort, however, you can pack delicious, portable and easy snacks that won't send you down a sugar (and worse) spiral.
- Fruit (cut these up)
- Veggies (ditto)
- Peel & Eat Shrimp
- Chicken or beef skewers (sometimes called "wings")
A cooler of water just for rinsing hands and a litter bag, you're ready to go. Back to the volleyball game!
Now, when it comes to what you have in that Red Solo Cup, you have to be even more discriminating. On one end of the spectrum there is ice cold, fresh water, maybe a little lemon -- nothing is better during a hot day on the beach. On the other end of the spectrum is the boozy, nauseatingly sweet margarita you made with that bright yellow, store-bought mix -- that's the start of a beach day gone bad. (Remember, somebody's got to drive.)
If you are enjoying a little alcohol during your beach day, keep it simple: a nice wine, some good rum, tequila or gin over rocks or with a little lime and tonic. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water as well as eating.
If you want to look as good at the beach next time as you do this time, pay attention to your eating and drinking while you're there. Have fun!
