Being social as important as exercise

Finding a fun, like-minded group of friends is vital to living a long, happy, healthy life.

Finding a fun, like-minded group of friends is vital to living a long, happy, healthy life.

We all know that good nutrition and consistent exercise are key to living a longer, healthier, happier life. But another key component often goes unmentioned even though it can be just as significant as being active and eating well. We're, of course, talking about having a good, supportive social circle.

In fact recent studies have found that the lack of a social network not only makes ill health worse but can lead to it in the first place.

As Ingrid Wickelgren writes in Scientific American:

In one of the recent studies on the health benefits of social relationships, published earlier this year, researchers provided evidence that social ties and increased contact with family and friends are associated with a lower risk of death in young women with breast cancer. Another presented a similar conclusion with respect to surviving heart surgery. What’s more, a 2010 meta-analysis of 148 other studies showed that social connection doesn’t just help us survive health problems: the lack of it causes them.

Having good friends makes life more fun. And having good friends that support you in becoming the best you possible is beyond powerful.

We've seen it time and again in the Momentum Fitness | 30A CrossFit family. Once someone steps through our door, they are not just joining a gym or signing up for workout classes, they are joining our tribe

Where else are you going to find so many people dedicated to improving themselves and those around them who are supportive and understanding? The power of that accountability within our classes and within in the gym is amazing and the change that you can make when you are backed by the good will, good graces and good humor of those around you is unlimited.
