"But I'm not competitive"

 Me, losing.

Me, losing.

Oh, believe me, I get it. I have a younger brother who was better at everything I cared about as a kid. Rather than spend the rest of my life upset and depressed about being older yet second best I just quit "competing".  I told myself winning didn't matter and I didn't care where I finished as long as I'd done my best.

Yeah, whatever.

It still bothers me and besides still hating lose it bothers even more that it bothers me. Why should I care? What possible difference could it make in this big ol' universe where I finish a game - a stinkin' game - relative to others!?!!

We're such a win/lose, "you're first or you're last" culture that winning is sometimes seen as the most important - or only - measure of our value as people. Lawyers aren't judged on being fair, impartial upholders of the law they're, judged on their cases won. Doctors are valued, not on their caring and striving to cure disease but on the percentage of successful procedures performed. There are pros at the top of both these professions that will routinely turn down cases because the risk of ruining their perfect track record is too high. They can't take the chance of failing and a client or patient is shuttled to someone else - someone with balls - to help them.

Here's the word. Competition is a test. When we train at the gym we like to say that we're competing against ourselves. Really what we're doing is using the score to compare and track improvement. I think we're really competing against the workout. That's what's testing us. Can I better this workout? How well can I do this task and not let it get the best of me?

On another level we compete with our classmates. The other person is there to provide me with a real life challenge to what I can do. "Steel sharpens steel". I only improve as I strive against real life challenges. By the same token I provide the same thing for others. I need to do well for the sake of my "competitors". Now competition isn't a head to head to see who can "win" but an opportunity to get and provide a challenge so we both get better.

I can only be my best when I push myself in a tangible way. By doing so I give someone else the same benefit.

Keep this in mind as we head into CrossFit Games Open season. It's not about you it's about them. Be a competitor. Register now.

Pack my lunch? Really!?!!

For our purposes we'll presume you're sleeping OK.  But right after that ya gotta eat. It's so easy to get overwhelmed during the day and just grab the first sorta-kinda edible substance and shove it in your pie hole. Not cool.

You're my friend!?!!

This is a reprehensible term and I hate it. Yet it serves a purpose in defining just how awful people can be. A DUFF, in case you don't know (good for you) is Designated Ugly Fat Friend. And, depending on the circles you run in, you could be one or have one. If you have more than one circle you might be both.

Comparing ourselves to others (and making ourselves feel better with negative outside comparisons) is an age-old sport and not likely to end any time soon. But this is the first era that I'm aware of that we've become so openly cruel about it.

Oh, the weather outside....

When the weather turns cold and most of your half of the world is under snow and ice it can be hard to think about seasonal vegetables as a thing. We all know about tomatoes and greens and all the amazing fruit that’s available in spring, summer and fall but what do I do with those roots and other weird looking things. I mean, carrots, OK, but a rutabaga? Really!?!!

Sugar's bad for me? Really?

dreamstime_xs_54589432.jpg

Here's the latest evidence of the biggest cover up you've never heard of. Even though we've known for years that there was some monkey business with marketing of sugar laden foods - especially soft drinks - calling them "part of a balanced diet" this report is the most direct evidence that Big Sugar knew this crap is bad for humans and buried that information.

This isn't really news. Unless you've been living on another planet you know too much sugar (which isn't much) is bad for you. It wears out your pancreas which then stops producing insulin and you wind up diabetic. It messes with your hormones which affects your sleep which messes with your hormones. Messing with your sleep increases stress as you try to get through an already stressful day. Which - wait for it - messes with your hormones.

The two-fold problem is this; you don't believe sugar is really that bad for you and it takes a long time to begin to really suffer from the effects.

You don't believe it because, well, sugar tastes good. For better or worse we're hard wired to enjoy sweet tastes. Add to this that you're being constantly marketed this junk and that it's in everything you buy and the smart money's against you.

So what to do? Get woke. Know what you're eating, recognize the messages you receive are designed to get you to buy things and not for your own good.

Don't be deceived.

Happy Holidays

What makes a regular day a holiday? Presents? Cake? Spare ribs? I offer that it's not the things we get or even the things we give but what we bring to the day, the effort and emotion that we invest, that make a random Wednesday or Saturday into a holiday.

Teach them young

dreamstime_xs_20547272.jpg

It's scary. A whopping 57% of the nation’s children and teens will be obese by age 35 if current trends continue, according to a sobering new study out Wednesday.

The research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, goes beyond previous studies suggesting unhealthy childhood weights often lead to adult obesity. It suggests that while heavy children face the highest risk, even those who make it to age 20 in good shape face substantial peril in a world where obesity could soon be the new normal.

“This study is the first to make precise predictions for today’s generation of children,” and the news is not good, said lead author Zachary Ward, a researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The findings, he said, show the need for stepped-up prevention efforts from infancy through young adulthood.

The current adult obesity rate, just updated by U.S. government researchers, stands at a record 39.8%. The rate in children and teens is 18.5%.  Adult obesity is linked with health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

What can you do? Model good behavior for your kids and their friends. Whether you believe it or not, even if they don't act like it, your kids pay attention to what you do. Upgrade your diet, move a little, quit smoking, drink more water. It doesn't have to be heroic, just be aware that you have an audience.

Follow through

A follow through is supposed to change everything. It's almost magic. Doesn't matter if it's a golf swing, a basketball shot or a tennis serve. But what is a "follow through" exactly?

What if your inner critic is right?

We all know the advice to "silence the inner critic". You know the voice (or voices) that whisper (or scream) that you're a talentless fraud or you're just lucky and don't deserve success, that sooner or later you'll be found out and it'll all come crashing down.

Yeah, definitely pay no attention to that. But what if your inner voice isn't your critic at all but your intuition?

An attitude of gratitude

It's easy to forget but so very important. Whatever we have is a gift. Sometimes we work hard and get nowhere, other times good fortune falls in our lap.

The Stoics are well known for this attitude of gratitude and the freedom from judging what happens to us. “Convince yourself that everything is the gift of the gods,” was how Marcus Aurelius put it, “that things are good and always will be.”

I don’t...

It’s a simple phrase but in can be incredibly powerful if you use it the right away. Especially if you use it instead of I can’t when it comes to a habit you are trying to change.

Seriously, it just feels so much better.
